1.3 Billion tonnes of food is wasted each year worldwide

We must come together as a community and change our habits and prevent the wasting of food to ensure a better future for our climate.

6.5 million tonnes

of food is wasted within UK households

With one third of the food we produce today going to waste research estimates that between 30% to 50% of the total amount of food thrown away comes from our own kitchens.

60% of that food waste is Avoidable

Plate scrapings, leftovers, gone off fruit and veg and passed its date perishables. We can control this waste easily by serving smaller portion sizes at meals times and by shopping smarter.

20% of that food waste is Potentially Avoidable

Things like bread crusts, potato skins. This waste could be used in another way; crusts could be made into breadcrumbs and then frozen until you need them.

20% of that food waste is Unavoidable

Such as banana skins and chicken bones.

How do we waste food?

Issue 1

We do not plan our shopping

When we go out for our weekly shop the majority of people tend to buy on instinct and do not plan out a shopping list for themselves.

Issue 2

We just don't care

After our shopping spree we tend to not care about how we put things away. This can lead to a messy kitchen and an unorganized fridge

Issue 3

Our fridges get overloaded

Not considering what's in our fridge when doing a weekly shop can lead to an overloaded fridge as we tend to purchase things we already have.

Issue 4

Food begins to go off

Once the fridge becomes overloaded with food and the food begins to go off, an unpleasent smell starts to come from the fridge.

Issue 5

Food is then thrown out

With this unpleasent smell from the fridge the food that has gone off is then wasted and thrown out into our general waste bin.

Issue 6

The process tends to repeat

Some people cannot change, and with this they lose money and damage the climate by wasting perfectly good food.

How Cook4Change prevents this

Encourages shopping lists

Cook4Change will allow the user to plan out a shopping list before they set out on their shopping spree. Having the ability to create a shopping list on the go can prepare you before your shop.

From creating a shopping list to managing their shopping budget the app will allow the user to have a better overall shopping experience and will encourage them to only buy what they need. This will lower the risk of a user throwing out perfectly good foods.

Better storage management

The app will let the user record what is currently in their fridge by inputting the product manually into the app. This will allow for better food storage management and will prevent the wasting of food.

Sustainable cooking

When a user prepares food they tend to waste perfectly edible parts of a vegetable or fruit. My app will teach a user sustainable cooking methods through the use of videos and sustainable cooking tips.

Sustainable recipes

Promoting home cooked meals is great for the environment. This app will encourage the user to cook their families and friends sustainable dishes by offering the user a selection of sustainable recipes to choose from.

Share your own recipes & foods

When cooking for the family or your friends you can share your sustainable recipes with them using the app. You can also share your leftover foods or foods you no longer need with the community. By sharing your leftover foods you are preventing additional food waste and saving our planet.
